How to fix oily hair (part 1)

If you're bothered by oily hair, some remedies like rinsing with apple cider vinegar and changing your shampooing routine can help make your hair less greasy without stripping your scalp of its natural oils.

An overly oily scalp can lead to uncomfortable itching and seborrheic dermatitis. It can even increase dandruff. But you don't want to strip your hair of all its oils. Natural oils protect your hair and support a healthy scalp and hair. Here's how to get rid of excess oil without damaging your hair or irritating your scalp.

Change your shampooing habits

1. Wash your hair more often

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, people with very oily hair may need to wash their hair up to once a day. Washing your hair helps remove excess oil, dirt, and product residue from your scalp.

2. Wash your hair less often

If you wash your hair once a day and it still feels greasy at the end of the day, you may want to change how often you wash your hair. Washing your hair too often can strip your scalp of its natural oils. This can cause your body to produce more oil to compensate. If you tend to have dry skin or a dry, itchy scalp, gradually increasing the frequency of your shampooing may help balance the oil production on your scalp.

3. Wash your hair properly

Washing your hair incorrectly can lead to an oily scalp and damaged hair. To wash your hair properly, gently apply a small amount of shampoo to your roots and scalp. Avoid using your nails to create unnecessary friction on your hair. Rubbing vigorously can irritate your scalp and cause it to produce more oil. Focus on your scalp, which has more oil than the length of your hair. Avoid applying shampoo directly to the ends of your hair or rubbing them. Instead, let the shampoo run through your ends as you rinse.

4. Use conditioner carefully

Conditioner can make your hair look greasy and cause oil to build up faster. Try conditioning only the ends of your hair and be sure to rinse thoroughly.

5. Let your hair dry naturally

Hair dryers can give you smooth, shiny hair. But they can also make your hair look greasy faster. Try letting your hair air dry and enjoy its natural texture. This will extend the time between washes and prevent heat damage. You can also try blow-drying your hair on a low heat setting.

6. Use products specifically for oily hair

If your shampoo doesn't work, try a sebum-regulating shampoo like Nubeà Equisebo Sebum Control Shampoo 200ml . Shampoo with pine, sage and clove essential oils and plant extracts. Deeply cleanses and prevents excessive sebum production.

However, if you like to sweat a lot or need to wash your hair every day, use Nubeà Synérgo Daily Shampoo 200ml . An extremely delicate shampoo based on eucalyptus essential oil, lavender, bergamot and plant extracts. Ideal in all cases where frequent washing is required, even twice a day, or for those who practice sports.

7. Be gentle with your hair

Whether you're washing, brushing, styling, or scratching your hair, it's important to be gentle. Scalp irritation can overstimulate your scalp and cause your oil glands to produce more oil.

8. Rinse your hair properly

Take an extra minute or two to make sure you get all the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair. This can make a big difference in how your hair looks and feels. Leftover products can coat your hair, making it look dirty and itchy.

9. Clean your hairbrush

Your hairbrush can get clogged with styling products, oils, and general dirt that can leave your hair looking dirty right after you wash it. Clean your styler with a clarifying shampoo or mild soap to remove residue. Likewise, clean out any loose hair after each brushing session to keep your brush free of oils and dirt.

Change your hair care products

10. Avoid products containing silicone

Many products, including shampoos, conditioners, creams, and styling products, contain silicones to help make hair softer and shinier. In addition to adding shine and making hair look greasy, silicones can also build up on hair and make it look dirty, greasy, and weighed down. Common silicones found in hair products can include:

  • dimethicone
  • cyclomethicone
  • amodimethicone

Silicones can also block beneficial moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. Try skipping any products with ingredients ending in “-cone.”

11. Try dry shampoo

Dry shampoos can help dry up oil and leave your hair looking cleaner. Many dry shampoos also add a fresh scent to your hair. The downside is that dry shampoos add residue, leaving your hair and scalp feeling rough and dirty. They also dry out your hair, so it’s best to use them occasionally and wash them out the next day to avoid irritation and damage.

12. To moisturize or not to moisturize?

If you have oily hair, consider adding a gentle conditioner. Gentle conditioners can help replenish and balance moisture in your scalp without causing your hair to overproduce. Oily hair is often the result of your scalp getting a signal to produce more oil because your hair is dry from using too many products. Experts recommend applying a small amount of conditioner to damp hair rather than dry hair to avoid a greasy look.

13. Tea Tree Oil Shampoo

Tea tree oil has antibiotic and antifungal properties. It can help reduce dandruff, itching, and oiliness. Look for shampoos that contain tea tree oil as an active ingredient for maximum effectiveness.

14. Green tea extract shampoo

This nutritious drink is also great for your hair. According to older research, green tea extract can reduce sebum production and nourish the skin when applied topically.
