Armpit hair begins during puberty. Between the ages of 10–12 in girls and 11–14 in boys, the pituitary gland activates a group of hormones called androgens in the ovaries and testicles. These sex hormones cause the apocrine sweat glands to become active (the body has another sweat gland, the eccrine glands, located in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet). The apocrine sweat glands are associated with hair follicles in the pubic and armpit areas.
What kind of fur is that?
Your hair goes through many changes as you age. As a newborn, you have lanugo, which soon turns into vellus hair in young children, and helps your body regulate its temperature. It is often called “peach fuzz” or “baby hair” because of its shape, which is short, thin, and light in color. Common areas include your nose, ears, and even eyelids.
However, during puberty, body hair changes again. Lanugo becomes terminal vellus hair, meaning it becomes thicker, stronger, and darker. Sensitivity to androgen levels also affects where the terminal vellus hair grows on the body, for everyone. As more androgens are produced, more areas will grow terminal vellus hair, such as the legs, arms, chest, abdomen, and feet.
Is armpit hair the same as pubic hair?
Facial hair, armpit hair and pubic hair are all the same type of hair, known as 'terminal hair'. It starts out as fine hair (vellus hair) and during puberty begins to change and progress to coarse hair. It falls out regularly and therefore the longest armpit or pubic hair will be less than 15cm.
Benefits of armpit hair
Although sometimes inconvenient, body hair actually benefits the body in many ways.
Good for pheromones
Armpit hair can actually help you find a mate. This is because armpits secrete scents that contain pheromones, natural chemicals that play a role in sexual attraction. By keeping your armpit hair intact, you help keep the scent in, as moisture (sweat) clings to the hair. This makes the pheromones even more potent.
Reduce friction
Armpit hair prevents skin-to-skin contact during certain activities, such as running and walking. The same goes for pubic hair, as it reduces friction during sex and other activities.
Prevent certain health conditions
In addition to reducing friction, not shaving your armpits can prevent certain problems. These include:
- Ingrown hair
- Razor burn
- Pimples in armpit
- Skin irritation
Benefits of Shaving Your Armpits
Smooth skin isn't the only benefit you can expect from shaving.
You will sweat less.
Are you tired of sweating too much or dealing with sweat stains on your clothes? Shaving your armpits can help because the hair actually traps moisture. However, some people naturally sweat more than usual. This is called hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes people to sweat excessively in their hands, feet, and armpits.
If you sweat a lot. You can use Breeze antiperspirant deodorants. Effective up to 48 hours with Italian perfume scent. Products are 100% imported from Italy.
Reduce body odor
Underarm sweat is directly related to body odor as it is the result of bacteria breaking down sweat. When you remove underarm hair, it reduces the amount of odor that is trapped.
Choose for yourself a suitable deodorant product from the Breeze antibacterial deodorant product line.
What does it mean to not have armpit hair?
If you can't grow armpit hair, it could be the result of genetics or certain health conditions. Conditions include:
- diabetes
- kidney disease
- asthma
- thyroid and pituitary abnormalities
If you have had laser underarm hair removal, the hair will not grow back for about 6 to 12 months.
Whether or not you want to remove body hair is a personal decision. This includes areas like your armpits or pubic hair. For many people, they choose to do so for aesthetic reasons—they like the look and feel of clean-shaven skin. There are also benefits, such as reducing sweat and body odor. If you find that your armpits don’t sweat or smell too much, then leave them alone.
