How much hair loss is normal?

Just seeing curls falling out while bathing is enough to make anyone shudder. Before you panic, it's important to know that a certain amount of hair loss is completely natural and it happens to everyone. Of course, that raises the question: How much hair loss is normal — and when is hair loss a cause for concern?

Here, we will address what hair loss is normal for and explain some of the factors that can contribute to increased hair loss. We will also give some recommended tips on how to care for your hair and keep unnecessary hair loss to a minimum.

Hair loss: What is normal?

According to the American AAD Institute, the average person loses 50 to 100 strands per day (the exact number may depend on the length, thickness, and condition of your hair). Although we may conventionally call this phenomenon “hair loss,” the reality is that hair loss is completely normal. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), hair grows in stages. Active growth is the anagen phase and is followed by the catagen phase, during which the growth rate slows down. The final phase is called the telogen phase. During this phase, growth stops and the hair is in its natural state of shedding (to be replaced by new strands at the bottom).

On the contrary, pathological hair loss is a condition in which hair cannot grow back after falling out. So, although normal hair loss is not something to worry about, if your hair is falling out and not growing back, leaving bald spots on your scalp, you need to be treated by a hair specialist.

4 common causes of hair loss

While it's completely normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day, there are some factors that can cause you to lose more (or make it appear like you're shedding more). Includes types:

Taking a shower

We love taking long showers, but that's also where we see the most hair loss. Luckily, according to the Cleveland Clinic, most of the hair loss you see in the shower isn't actual hair loss but rather the natural shedding of your hair strands on a daily basis. Your hair type also plays an important role in determining the normal amount of hair loss in the shower. People with thinner strands tend to shed less than those with thicker strands and wash their hair once or twice per week.

Remember that while washing your hair alone does not cause hair loss, your showering habits can affect the health of your hair. Hot baths can be relaxing, but high temperatures can strip moisture from the skin and hair, leading to dry skin. The result makes your hair vulnerable to damage or breakage. While hair breakage is not hair loss, severe breakage can cause your hair to thin — so it's best to take baths that are moderately warm and not too hot.

Have a baby

During pregnancy, you may notice that your hair is thicker and fuller than usual - that's no coincidence. According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), the increase in hormones that occur during pregnancy can reduce hair loss. Sadly, these are only temporary: After you give birth and your hormone levels return to normal, your hair will resume its normal hair growth cycle. When this happens, you may experience more hair loss than usual. Although alarming, postpartum hair loss is considered normal and you can expect your hair to return to its pre-pregnancy state within a year. However, if you lose clumps of hair or your hair doesn't grow back, you may need to tell your doctor.

Natural aging process

This is perhaps not surprising. According to the AAD, as you age, hair growth slows down. At the same time, hair may lose color (in other words, turn gray) and become softer and more mineral. All of this is part of the natural aging process, but if you're worried about it, your doctor can give advice on how to stimulate hair growth.

Hair care and styling

How you care for your hair on a daily basis, the products you use, and the chemical services you choose can have a significant impact on the health of your hair. A healthy and consistent hair care routine with products suitable for hair types can go a long way in reducing unnecessary hair loss.

Whether creating an elaborate hairstyle or untangling strands into a simple ponytail, you'll probably lose a few strands whenever you work. While some hair loss is nothing to worry about, you can reduce the amount of hair loss by handling it gently and carefully detangling it.
