Differences in body odor between men and women – How does science explain it?

Body odor is a natural phenomenon but it makes many people lose confidence in communication. Although living in the same environment and eating quite similar food, men and women's body odors have obvious differences. So what is the scientific reason behind this difference?

Sweat glands – the “root” of body odor

The human body has two main types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine glands are distributed throughout the body, mainly for temperature regulation and cause little odor. Meanwhile, apocrine glands are concentrated in the armpits, groin, and scalp - where body odor is most likely to appear.

In men, the apocrine glands are more active and secrete more sweat containing proteins and lipids. These substances become the "raw materials" for bacteria to decompose, creating a characteristic odor, often stronger and more intense than in women. This is also the reason why many men choose Breeze Spray Dry Protection deodorant to effectively control sweat odor during long days of activity.

Hormones – the difference maker

Not only sweat glands, hormones also play a big role in the formation of body odor differences. Testosterone in men stimulates the development of apocrine sweat glands, thereby enhancing male body odor. In contrast, estrogen in women tends to reduce the activity of these glands, making female body odor often lighter and less strong.

With this difference, women often prioritize products with elegant and gentle perfume scents such as Breeze The Verde deodorant spray - both dry and pleasant scent, maintaining confidence in communication.

Genetics and the Skin Microbiome

A study published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology (2009) found that the difference in body odor between men and women is also related to genetics and the skin microbiome. Men's skin tends to have a higher pH, more bacteria that break down sweat, leading to stronger body odor【Havlíček & Roberts, 2009】.

Additionally, research by Callewaert et al., PLoS ONE (2014) showed that Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium bacterial clusters in the armpit region play a direct role in the formation of gender-specific body odors【Callewaert et al., 2014】.

Odor changes according to biological cycle

In women, some studies have also found subtle changes in body odor according to the ovulation cycle. Specifically, a report in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B (2001) showed that women's body odor during ovulation may become more attractive to men, as a biological signal in evolution [Singh & Bronstad, 2001].

Effective ways to remove body odor for men and women

Despite differences in mechanism, both men and women can apply scientific measures to control body odor:

  • Keep personal hygiene clean, shower immediately after strenuous exercise.

  • Choose cool clothes made of moisture-wicking material.

  • Limit foods that cause odors such as garlic, onions, alcohol.

  • Use the right deodorant: Men can choose Breeze Spray Invisible Protection to both deodorize and not stain their clothes; women can use Breeze Roll-on Neutro , which is gentle and easy to carry.

Conclude

The difference in body odor between men and women is not only due to daily habits, but also the result of hormones, sweat glands and genetics. Understanding this mechanism will not only help you feel less self-conscious, but also find a suitable solution to eliminate body odor. And choosing the right deodorant like Breeze will be a powerful "assistant", helping you feel more confident in all situations.
